Today’s ride was one for the record books! When we first began training on the bikes, we could barely ride for 5 miles. Today we completed 40 miles, including bridge climbs!
As the sun began to peek over the horizon, the team gathered in the parking lot at the Boynton Beach Inlet for a briefing on our workout. Coach Brian was unable to attend, so he sent Coach Rob to complete his bidding. Our challenge was ride to Palm Beach Inlet and back, completing 14 bridge climbs at the Lake Worth Intercoastal Bridge on the way up and 12 on the way back. We didn’t quite get all our bridge climbs in, but that’s ok. ☺
We began our ride as a group, but quickly split into the fast group (not us) and the slow group. However, let it be stated that as the slow group we are averaging 15mph on flat road. So that is not too shabby!
As we barreled north on A1A, the Lake Worth bridge quickly came into view. Our opponent is formidable, but we had the advantage of conditioning rides during the week and Coach Rob at our side with climbing pointers.
Mom did amazing!! She completed 10 bridge climbs before heading out north for some easy flat riding. From the woman who could barely do 2 bridge climbs last week, this was incredible. On our way back south Mom was able to tackle 6 more bridge climbs. Cue the rejoicing!
Post training Mom had one hilarious quote, “After this ride my body starting releasing endorphins and I am definitely allergic to them.” Let's see how she feels next week after we go 45 miles. :)
